216 pages, seven hours of tutorials, five bonus ebooks, and 200 templates.
That’s what you get when you buy the best-selling book on Amazon: “Excel: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Maximizing Your Excel Experience for Maximum Productivity and Efficiency.”
Who has more than seven hours to read books and watch videos about Excel?
We don’t.
In 2013, Tim Worstall, a business and economics writer, published an opinion piece in Forbes titled: “Microsoft's Excel Might Be The Most Dangerous Software On The Planet.”
It holds a lot of truth once you look past the seemingly hyperbolic title. At least, that’s what we believe.
Using Microsoft Excel can be dangerous, intimidating, and scary. And yet, it has been and will continue to be, the most important software in business.
It can be fun to read about the massive Excel fails, such as when, in 2012, Bloomberg reported that JP Morgan lost billions in a financial trade largely due to a “spreadsheet error” that “underestimated risk by half.”
The reality is that there are many everyday challenges that we don’t hear about.
The HR Operations Analyst sourcing raw data from different systems and converting it into tables and summaries for their weekly reports.
The M&A lawyer analyzing the number of equity awards and common stock outstanding to calculate the correct value for a proposed deal.
The undergraduate student building a three-statement financial model in their investment valuation class for the first time.
Either way, Excel is widely used for specific tasks, but most users don't see themselves as experts and don’t have hours to spend on tutorials to become one.
That’s why we created Rosie, your personal AI assistant who is an expert in Excel.
It's 5 pm on a Friday. You and your work bestie are tired after a long week. That evening, you’ve planned a visit to the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, so art is on your mind.
Your friend stops you just as you are about to leave.
“Hey, I’m trying to figure out how to fix something in Excel. Can you take a look?”
“Sure!” you say.
“I got a spreadsheet with thousands of rows of oddly arranged data. For some rows, all the data is crammed into one cell, while it’s spread across 20 cells for others. Each row is different, and I can't write a formula to fix it.” “It'll take me all night to manually fix this.”
You look at the spreadsheet; it seems more like a Pollock than a Piet.
You’ve seen this problem before and say: “Wait! There is a formula to fix this. Give me a few minutes and I’ll show you how.”.
What only took you 5 minutes saved your work bestie 5 hours. On a Friday. After a long week at the office.
That’s why we created Rosie.
Just by having a simple conversation, like talking to a friend or ChatGPT, Rosie can help you analyze data, write VBA code, and be a thought partner. She's especially good at writing, understanding, and fixing formulas.
You don’t have to waste hours searching tutorials, books, or forums to figure things out. Just ask Rosie.
=THE HUMANS BEHIND ROSIE
Dennis Jiang, co-founder and CEO, held senior product roles at Chime and Gigster. Early in his career, he had a four-year stint as a Bain consultant, during which he estimates he spent more time in Excel than with his friends and family combined.
He’s proud of his sometime arcane knowledge of Excel, like its 15-digit precision limit. It’s usually no big deal, but throw in a complex model full of nested formulas, and suddenly that limitation becomes a problem.
Andrew Tamura, co-founder and CTO, held senior engineering roles at Scoop, Mixmax and Smarking. He’s particularly interested in finding ways to help people be more productive by integrating large language models (LLMs) in everyday tools like Excel.
=THE FUNDRAISE
Co-led by NOMO ventures and Hyphen Capital, we raised $1.5M to support product development, key engineering hires, and our go-to-market efforts.
We’re particularly grateful to Alumni Ventures and angels who participated in the round. Angels include founders of companies like Chime, Opendoor, and Kikoff.
